twitter_power_joel_comm_150Remember @BPOrchestra? A couple of days ago they followed me, I followed back and then they unfollowed me. On Monday I sent them an @ message. As I assumed based on their tweet updates, it took them a day to get back to me. When they did they were very apologetic. They followed again (and I followed back). They even offered me two free tickets. I respectably declined (wouldn’t want the FCC on my case!). But seriously, they are a non-profit, after all, and I am sympathetic to cyber-mistakes, having committed my fair share. But, let’s not dwell on mistakes. Let’s reveal a little gossip.

twitter_power_joel_comm_150This Twitter Churn and Burn Hypothesis seems to have some legs. It makes me think a lot of folks waste a lot of time on Twitter. Why else would they follow and unfollow in less than 24 hours? I can almost understand the marketers doing this with all their fancy machines. But regular folks? And, especially, non-profits? @BPOrchestra, out of the blue, followed me. Since I feel I belong in their target market, I followed back. Then they unfollowed me. Go figure. So I asked them why with an “@” question. They haven’t updated their tweets in a while so I might not hear from them until tomorrow. But, instead of worrying about my followers – or unfollowers as the case may be – on this day I learn I should worry about my own motives.

twitter_power_joel_comm_150Today’s the first day I’ve been really disappointed with this experiment. Although I admit I’ve been busy this weekend, I didn’t totally ignore Twitter. I followed a number of folks back. I did continue to do as Joel Comm suggested and I even got a big bounce in activity on my blog – at least as judged by Google Analytics.

But, given all that, I wake up this morning to find only two more followers. I’m beginning to formulate a hypothesis. I’ll call it the “Twitter Churn and Burn Hypothesis.” Here’s how it works:

twitter_power_joel_comm_150To be honest, I’ve been posting links for awhile. But I did one again, first thing in the morning. I posted a link to this experiment and the Survey Monkey survey. I can’t say anyone responded to the former. I can definitively say no one responded to the latter. Well, at least I can so nobody voted.

Then I left the Twitterverse to work on the final script for the AstronomyTop100.com official Top Ten Countdown Awards Show scheduled for this coming Friday night. As a result, I didn’t do much to add to the experiment. I did accelerate the experiment through “off-Twitter” marketing by creating a discussion in a couple of LinkedIn groups I belong to.

Missed yesterday? Go here to read what happened on Day 11 – November 24, 2009 (Tue): Have Fun!

twitter_power_joel_comm_150Well, let’s just say I woke up to a pleasant surprise this morning. Not only had my following paid off in new followers, but I discovered some of those new followers had added me to their lists. However, an “@” response from Democrat & Chronicle sports writer Sal Maiorana. Now, those who know me have full knowledge of my familiarity with the media, but, other than the fact Mike Catalana used to live next to my brother, most of my contacts reside on the business page. In fact, this morning I spoke to D&C reporter Matt Daneman about credit default swaps.

Sal had some interested comments on the disposition of the Buffalo Bills coach. He seems to feel a top-tier won’t desire coming to the Bills due to lack of talent.

Although Joel Comm had his own ideas for the next two days, I realized that, with today being the day before Thanksgiving and tomorrow being Thanksgiving, I figure there won’t be much action on Twitter. I continued to experiment with the “@” and DM functions and found out I accidentally @’d the wrong person. The whole knew. Oops! In the end, it probably came across as more of a non sequitur and less of a “your slip is showing” kind of event.

For the most part, the rest of the evening I spent cleaning off our dining room table in anticipation of tomorrow’s big family feast. It’s the least I can do for my lovely wife.

twitter_power_joel_comm_150Hooray! I’m a third of the way done. So far, I’m less than impressed, and we’re heading into the Thanksgiving holiday so I think I won’t be seeing too much activity. Maybe Friday.

OK, so I just had fun today. I really didn’t have much time during the work day to address any Twitter items except for a few work related ones. After work (and my kids’ parent-teacher conferences), I went back on and repeated several of the steps Joel Comm recommended for the previous days. I followed a handful of Rochester Social Media Club folks (this time) Mike recommended. I also engaged in a few conversations and asked a question. I sent some targeted “@” posts to some folks who appeared in my “Back to the Future” article posted November 12, 2009. I even sent an @ message to Chris Brogan to encourage him to read the “It’s Déjà Vu All Over Again” article telling of his Veteran’s Day visit to Rochester to speak before the Social Media Today Conference. Lee actually left a great comment on the former. Who knows if Chris Brogan even noticed my one grain of sand tweet in his Twitterverse.

That’s it for today. Just a little fun and a lot of real work. And what little free time will now be devoted to either GearFreeze or AstronomyTop100.com for the next two weeks.

Missed yesterday? Go here to read what happened on Day 9 – November 22, 2009 (Sun): Ask a Question

twitter_power_joel_comm_150I first tried answering this question:

stompernetfan Can We Benefit From The Substitution Effect? http://trcb.us/IsA

about 6 hours ago from API

All right, I know it was 6 hours old, but it was the first question I found. To help spur debate, I retweeted it. Here’s what I said in my answer:

ChrisCarosa @stompernetfan Generally, the substitution effect becomes prevalent during economic down cycles like we have not.

3 minutes ago from web in reply to stompernetfan

I looked around for some more questions, but more of them involved high schoolers trying to find dates and other juvenile things. Today was a pretty wasted day (in Twitterland, but very productive at work – could there be a correlation?).

twitter_power_joel_comm_150As luck would have it, the Buffalo Bills played Jacksonville today. With a new coach and some free time during the game, I figured this would be a great topic to ask a question.

OK, I tried asking a question:

ChrisCarosa @thurmanthomas Watcha know about Parrish’s sudden appearance?

41 minutes ago from web in reply to thurmanthomas

I waited a while and watched a little more of the Bills game. When I returned, I found I got nothing, so I tried this one:

Here’s what happened on Day 7 – November 20, 2009 (Fri): Start Catching Big Followers

twitter_power_joel_comm_150Sorry, I skipped the whole day because of my son’s FLL robotics team GearFreeze at the regional qualifiers at Churchville-Chili today. They took the trophy for Excellent Project Award. Congrats GearFreeze. Now it’s on to the Finger Lakes Championship. I did notice I got some more followers, but I obviously didn’t have time to follow more. I can take care of that tomorrow.

twitter_power_joel_comm_150What’s a big follower? I guess someone who has and follows tens of thousands of followers. In an amazing twist of events, these big time marketers, perhaps triggered by some social media comment I made, start following me. In addition, I’m starting to get some good follow-backs. It’s a light day on Twitter because most of my daylight hours are spent at work and most of my evening hours are spent emptying the camcorder so I can record my son’s FLL robotics team GearFreeze at the regional qualifiers tomorrow. Good luck guys!
