What began as a leisurely escapade on a soft summer day ended as a grueling excursion in heat and humidity…
“Moderate Bicycling,” the brochure said. I interpreted modest hills and a more scenic landscape than an easier course might offer. Besides, I’ve been riding bikes since my preschool days – it couldn’t be that difficult.

Author’s Comment: I simply ran out of time to write a replacement piece for What Do You Think? before the deadline hour struck. Truth be told, I wasn’t too happy they refused to print the original piece. After all, I was the publisher of the newspaper, wasn’t I? So, when I accidentally hit the wrong button and erased about an hour of creative work, the camel’s back had been broken. Between the three (time, anger and an errant finger), I decided it was best to avoid passion getting the better of me so I skipped trying to do something for this week. No one seemed to mind me being gone for a week. Lots of press folks take off the entire month of August (at least back then), so it was no big deal.
